Amigo's Restaurant

Investigation Dates: Friday 21 April – Saturday 22 April 2006

Location: Amigos Restaurant, Ruthven St Toowoomba

Investigators: Kevin G , Karen B-G, Kevin W & Zowie C

Background of Location
The building where Amigos Restaurant is currently located has seen a number of businesses operate there over its’ history. The investigation team was not able to confirm the exact age of the building. It was thought to have been the location of a picture theatre in the 1930s. Therefore, we would estimate that the current building may be at least 80 years old.

Previous to opening as a restaurant the location was home to Zone 3 in the 1990s. Zone 3 was an interactive games and entertainment centre.

Prior to this period the building was occupied by a lighting and electrical business called Town Lighting and Electrical. This business is thought to have operated at this location throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Alleged Paranormal Activities
The staff at the location have reported a number of unexplained activities believed to have occurred over a period of months.

Alleged sighting of an apparition of very young girl
The restaurant manager, Peter, claims that there is the presence of a very young girl around the building. Peter claims that he can feel her presence more when his own small children are in the location.

Peter alleged that on one occasion a friend went up to the 3rd floor storage room on his own. Peter claims that his friend saw the apparition of a small girl huddled in the corner of the room. The girl was not there when he returned with Peter.

Alleged sighting of an apparition of a man in a flannelette shirt in the Restaurant
Peter claimed that he saw the apparition of a tall, dark male figure one morning when he was set up the restaurant. The figure was alleged to have been seen near the archway in the middle of the restaurant.

Feeling of a presence in various locations around the building
The staff claim to experience cold spots and feel uneasy when walking along the hallway in the back area of the restaurant. This hallway is a staff only area which leads to the rear entry.

The staff have reported feeling the presence of the young girl in the office area located in the back of the building.

Katrina, a staff member claims to feel as if she is being watched from time to time when she is in the office area working.

Date and Time of Investigation
The investigation was conducted on the evening of Friday 21 April 2006. The investigation of the location commenced at approximately 9:30pm and concluded at approximately 2am on Saturday morning 22 April 2006.

Equipment Used During Investigation
The following equipment was used for the investigation:

Digital Thermometer
Application: Determine room temperature. Determine if any cold/hot spots in location

Infrared Thermometer
Application: Check for any unusual cold/hot spots from a distance

Electro-Magnetic Field Meter
Application: Check for electro-magnetic fields in location.
Check for unusually high readings

Tri-Field Meter
Application: Check for ‘natural’ electro-magnetic fields.
Check for EM fluctuations(EM fields are emitted by humans and animals among other things)

Anemometer
Application: Check for any drafts coming from doors, windows or any cracks or cavities.

Infrared Camera and Video Recorder
Application: Recorded location under very low light.

Infrared Spotlight
Application: Increase lighting for infrared camera

Digital Camera
Application: Still photos of location

Camcorder
Application: Recording progress of investigation for record of any unusual occurrences.

Polaroid Camera
Application: Instant photos around site.

Equipment Readings The following readings were recorded during the investigation:
During the investigation the restaurant area, office, rear hallway, kitchen and 3rd floor storage rooms were monitored.

Equipment: Digital Thermometer
Comments
No unusual change in temperature was recorded during investigation.
The hallway area was slightly colder than the other areas of the building. This was due to a considerable draft coming from large holes in the wall towards the rear of the hallway. The draft was made more significant by the difference in air pressure created by the air conditioning in the restaurant area located at the front of the building.

Equipment: Infrared Thermometer
Comments
No unusual change in temperature was recorded during investigation.

Equipment: Electro-Magnetic Field Meter
Comments
A fluctuation of 0.5 – 1.5mg reading occurred in the top storage room at approximately 10:30pm.
There were no further unusual readings throughout the building during the investigation.

Equipment: Tri-Field Meter
Comments
A fluctuation of 0.5 – 1.5mg reading occurred in the top storage room at approximately 10:30pm.
There were no further unusual readings throughout the building during the investigation

Equipment: Anemometer
Comments
A significant reading was recorded in the hallway area. This confirmed the cold airflow occurring in this location due to large holes in the wall towards the rear of the hallway and the change in air pressure due to the air conditioning at the front (restaurant area) of the building. This created a ‘wind tunnel’ effect.

Conditions at Location
Restaurant Area
Normal airflow from this open area.
Creaky floorboard.
No wind noises (e.g. howling, swishing, voice like)
No noisy plumbing
No noisy/faulty electrical. Including surges.
A few creaks & cracks were heard. This would probably be Movement of old Building.

Office Area
No drafts from windows, doors, etc
No creaky/noisy floorboards, doors, etc
No noisy plumbing
No noisy/faulty electrical. Including surges.
Refrigerator made quite a noticeable whirring noise from its motor.
No general movement of building (creaks, cracks, etc)

Hallway Area
As mentioned above, a significant draft occurs from holes in the walls towards the rear of the buildings. A ‘wind tunnel’ effect is created by the change in air pressure from the air conditioning in the restaurant area at the front of the building.
No creaky/noisy floorboards, doors, etc
No noisy plumbing
No noisy/faulty electrical. Including surges.
No general movement of building (creaks, cracks, etc)

3rd Floor Storage Area
No drafts from windows, doors, etc
No creaky/noisy floorboards, doors, etc
No noisy plumbing
No noisy/faulty electrical. Including surges.
No general movement of building (creaks, cracks, etc)
Stairs to 3rd floor storage area

Brief description of construction and condition of building
The building is made of timber and has 3 levels. The condition of the building appears good. Doors, windows and other fittings appear sound and in good working order.

Observations During Investigation at Location
The following observations were made throughout the investigation. The Investigation team continued to remain alert to all sensory perceptions. The purpose of this stage of the investigation was to scan the area under investigation for any activities that may have offered a natural explanation for alleged paranormal activities. The Investigation team noted all activities explainable or not.

No building movement or tremors were detected during the investigation.

There were minimal external noises. The exception was the sounds of vehicles and people in the city street area at the front of the building. The restaurant is located in the inner city area of the town. Therefore, there is a high volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the building. These street noises can be heard in the restaurant area and the 3rd floor storage area.

Vigil
Vigil – 3 floor storage area

Time: 10:30 – 11:30pm
Observations: No unexplainable phenomenon was observed during vigil. Karen and Zowie claimed that a glass of soft drink sat on the ledge in the room shook from time to time. They noticed this movement by the sound of the ice in the glass clinking together.
This may have been caused by movement in the building due to heavy traffic outside.

Vigil definition: Time spent in complete darkness sitting in quiet observation. This vigil was videoed with 1 infrared camera.

Summary of Interviews of people at the location
Peter, the manager gave a clear impression that he believed there were ghostly activities in the building. During the interview Peter discussed the spirit of very young girl that he claimed was moving about the restaurant, office and top storage room area. When he was asked had he actually seen an apparition of this girl, he declared he had not. He rationalised the claim that the alleged spirit was that of a young girl because he could feel she was. Peter went on to claim that he had seen what he believes was the apparition of a tall dark male figure dressed in a flannelette shirt in the restaurant one morning when he was setting up for the days business. He believes that this male ghost resides down in the basement area of the building. He had no clear reason for this believe.

Katrina, a staff member, also believes there is the ghost of a little girl in the building. She has not seen anything to confirm her believe, but she claims to have felt her presence. When asked why she believes this presence she claims to sense is that of a little girl, Katrina can only explain that this is how it feels for her. Katrina claims to feel the sense that someone is watching her from time to time when she is working in the office area.

Two bar staff were informally interviewed to determine whether they had experienced anything unusual while working in the building. They both claimed to believe in the presence of the ghost of a little girl in the building, although they had never seen or sensed her presence.

Conclusions From Investigation
Extensive readings and recordings were taken inside the complete interior of the building, including the restaurant area. Equipment used for this investigation included digital thermometer, electro-magnetic field meter, Tri-Field meter, digital still camera and four camcorders fitted with infrared lights.

There were no significant readings from the Electro-Magnetic Field or Tri-Field meters in any of the areas investigated. A fluctuation of 0.5 – 1.5mg in the readings from both the EMF and Tri-field meters occurred in the 3rd floor storage room at approximately 10:30pm. There is no explanation for this variation for this particular time of the night.

During a vigil by Karen and Zowie in the 3rd floor storage room they claimed to see and hear a glass of soft drink moving as it sat on the ledge. They claimed to hear the ice clinking in the glass. This can be explained as vibration in the building caused by heavy traffic around the building. The vigil took place on a Friday night when traffic in the city area would be heavy from time to time.

The claim by staff of the presence of the ghost of a little girl was interesting. There appeared to be an acceptance of this story across the staff without the evidence of 1st person experience of any phenomena. In fact, no one claimed to see her except for the alleged sighting in the 3rd floor storage area by a friend of Peter. Peter claims to have not discussed his believe in the existence of the ghost with his friend prior to the alleged sighting. Without interviewing the friend of the manager to confirm the claims around the alleged sighting in the 3rd floor storage room it is difficult to draw a sound conclusion to this alleged episode.

It would be reasonable to conclude that most of the staff who believe in the presence of ghosts in the Amigo’s Restaurant building have formed this belief through the influence of suggestion. It has been difficult to determine when the belief in the presence of the little girl commenced.

The uncomfortable feeling experienced by staff when they walk along the rear hallway can be explained by the significant draft flowing constantly from the rear to the front of the hallway. This is caused by the air pressure moving through large holes near the rear of the hallway towards the air conditioned restaurant area. The hallway is long and narrow. The cool air flows as a wind along this area. These factors can make this hallway appear unsettling, particularly when the person is alone in the area. The office area is situated directly off this hallway. This may also explain why people report feeling uneasy when they are working alone in the office.

Findings From Audio and Video Recordings
Dining/sitting Room
Nothing to report from digital photos.
An audio recording detected a humming or droning like sound during the 1:58 minute recording. This recording took place at approximately 11:30pm.
During the 3rd vigil which took place in the dining room a small translucent object moves into view from the bottom right of the screen in left ward direction. The object then moves upward, then down before disappearing.
This vigil took place between 1 – 1:30am.

Kitchen & Back Area
Nothing to report from digital photo, audio recordings or video taken while at the location.

Bedroom 1
2 photos have a light anomaly:
Photo 1. The anomaly appears above the bed around the bottom middle section of the curtains. The light anomaly is a half circle shape with a cross like base.
Photo 2. The anomaly appears above the bed around the middle section of the curtains. The light anomaly appears quite straight, angling in a forward slash.

Nothing to report from audio recordings or video taken while in bedroom 1.

Findings From Video Recordings of Bedroom 2 – Trigger Object
Rationale for test:
An object is placed on a blank piece of paper. The outline of the object is traced on the paper in order to detect if the trigger object moves during the observation period. The object is left in an unoccupied room which is closed off and video taped with an infrared camera in complete darkness for 30 – 90 minutes.

The object chosen was a wooden cross approximately 20 centimetres long.

Conclusion: No audio or video phenomenon was recorded from infrared video Camera.

The trigger object showed no evidence of movement during unsupervised video taping.

Significant note: The trigger object was set up at least 1 hour prior to video recording. The object was left unsupervised in bedroom 2 during this period. When Kevin returned to begin the recording he noticed that the object appeared to have moved slight off the traced lines. This observation can not be verified by Karen as she did not witness the trigger object set up. No one entered the room during this period.

Findings From Unsupervised Infrared Video Recordings
Rationale for monitoring:
One or more sections of the location are video taped with an infrared camera in complete darkness. The sections located are usually where alleged paranormal activities have been reported.

The location is vacated and access is closed off to everyone during this period. Monitoring equipment is usually not collected until the next morning. The area/s are usually filmed for 2 – 4 hours.
Dining/sitting room
No audio or video phenomenon was recorded.

Back area
No audio or video phenomenon was recorded.

Conclusions From Investigation
Extensive readings and recordings were taken inside the complete interior of the cottage. Equipment used for this investigation included digital thermometer, electro-magnetic field meter, Tri-Field meter, digital still camera and four camcorders fitted with infrared lights.

There were no significant readings from the Electro-Magnetic Field or Tri-Field meters in the dining room, sitting room, bedroom one or bedroom two. A slightly higher reading was recorded from both meters along the walls of the back area between the kitchen and bathroom.

Kevin reported a chilling feeling when ever he moved around the end of the dining room near the fireplace.

Two photos taken in bedroom 1 showed light anomalies. Both light anomalies appeared over the bed. The light anomaly in the first photo appears as a half circle with a cross like base. The light anomaly in the second photo appears as a straight line angling in a forward slash.

A humming or droning like sound was detected during an audio recording taken at 11:30pm in the dining room.

During a vigil in the dining and sitting room the stationary infrared camera recorded a small translucent object moving from the bottom of the screen. It moved left, then up, then down before disappearing.

Nothing was detected from the infrared camera recording of the trigger object which was locked off in bedroom 2 for 60 minutes. The trigger object was set up approximately 1 hour prior to recording. Kevin noticed that the trigger object had moved slightly off the traced line when he returned to start recording.
Nothing was detected from the infrared camera recordings undertaken in the dining/sitting room and back room. These cameras were set up at approximately 2am. Both cameras recorded until approximately 5am that same morning.
The following is a video summary of this investigation:

Gowrie House, Toowoomba

Investigation Dates: 01 April & 24 April 2006

Location: Gowrie House, Mary St Toowoomba

Investigators: Kevin G, Karen B, William E, Joanne E

Background of Location
The main building was designed by HJ Mark for local business person Alexander Mayes and was completed between 1901-1902. The building was named ‘Largo’ and was home to Alexander and Helena Mayes until 1922. The building was occupied by Walter Watts until it was sold to Dr Albert Furness in 1936. Dr Furness conducted alterations to the building through Architect William Hodgen. In 1945 the building was acquired by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YMCA).

The Building was re-named Gowrie House, after Lady Gowrie who was the wife of the Australian Governor General at the time. Brig-Gen Alexander Hore-Ruthven, lst Baron Gowrie was the Governor General between 1936-1945.

The Wadley Wing was constructed in the late 1950s to meet the increase in country girls seeking accommodation to attend secondary school in Toowoomba. In 1971 the Margaret Hofmann Wing was constructed and opened as the demand for accommodation continued (named after a past YMCA President).

A two storey accommodation building was built at the rear of the property in 1990.

In 1995 Gowrie House was heritage listed as a significant historic property.

In 2003 Gowrie House ceased operating as a boarding house due to changes in state legislation relating to safety standards for boarding house accommodation.

Alleged Paranormal Activities
It has been alleged that the apparition of a lady in a long grey dress has been seen walking the hallway of the original building. It has been reported that this alleged apparition appears after 10pm or in the very early hours of the morning. The alleged apparition is claimed to be a former housekeeper.

Doors have been said to have opened apparently on their own.

Date and Time of Investigation
The initial investigation was conducted on the evening of 01 April, 2006.
A second investigation was conducted on the evening of 24 April, 2006. This investigation primarily consisted of video and audio surveillance of the upstairs accommodation section at the rear of this property. The second investigation was conducted after a YWCA official reported hearing sounds like someone walking around in the upstairs accommodation section. Another official inspected the area immediately finding no evidence of anyone in the location.

Recordings from the 4 hour video presented some unusual and unexplainable sounds after the Investigation Team had left the premises. An edited video tape highlighting the anomalies recorded was given to two YWCA employees working at Gowrie House for their comments. Both agreed that they were unable to offer an explanation for these sounds:
Auditory
Clicking noises followed by a sweeping like sound
Very slight shuffling sounds
Sound of an object hitting a hard surface (like pebbles hitting glass)
Paper crackling sound
Knocking sounds – like someone knocking on a door
Voice like sound – droning sound – seems to change pitch
Visual
Small white dot floats across hall. May be dust or a moth.

Director’s Room
Nothing to report from digital photos or video taken while at the location.

Side Verandah
Nothing to report from digital photos, audio recordings or video taken while at the location.

Findings From Video Recording of Upstairs
Accommodation Section of Building
Date: 24 April, 2006
Approximate Recording Times: 9.05pm To 1.30am

Some very unusual and interesting sounds were recorded during the evening. While setting up the video equipment the investigation team witnessed the sounds of what was most likely to be a possum moving about either in or on top of the roof of the upstairs accommodation section. The investigation team noticed that floorboards were very noisy and creaky both going up the stairs and along the entry into the hallway.
Dragging noises, scratching sounds
Bumping and knocking sounds
Scraping noises
Sounds like that of a door closing (door to the upstairs section was closed by us as we left the building)
Sounds like that of walking on the floorboards (3 individual instances)
Whistle like sound
Shuffling sounds

Conclusions From Investigation
01 April 2006 Investigation

Extensive readings and recordings were taken using the equipment mentioned earlier in this report. Investigations were undertaken of the Hallway, Directors Room and Side Verandah to the main building.

Readings from the scientific equipment presented no significant or unusual activities. Still photos taken from the Instant camera and the digital camera were normal. There were no anomalies recorded while filming the progress of the investigation on the video camera.

Our inspection of the building found no evidence of drafts, plumbing noises, building movement noises (eg creaks and cracks) or electrical noises (eg humming, buzzing).

The Investigation team did not experience an unusual activities, events or phenomena of any significance during our time in Gowrie House.

The infrared camera and audio surveillance of the Hallway recorded noises that were difficult to explain. The two YWCA staff members who viewed the edited down video tape where also unable to find an explanation for the noises recorded. This does not suggest, however, that the noises recorded were paranormal. The white dot floating across the hallway was most likely dust.

24 April 2006 Investigation
The investigation of the upstairs accommodation section at the rear of the property was that of a 4 hour infrared camera and auditory recording. This occurred between approximately 9:00pm on 24 April and 1:30am on 25 April 2006.

While setting up our equipment we witnessed scratching sounds and what appeared to be the sound of a small animal running about in or on the roof above us. The Investigation Team believe that possums or perhaps cats may have made these noises.

Some of the sounds recorded during the surveillance may have been produced by the small animals we detected during our setup of the equipment. However, sounds like that of:
a door closing;
walking on the floorboards;
Whistling;
are more difficult to explain.

Again, we cannot conclude that any of the recorded sounds were paranormal.

The Bull & Barley Inn

Investigation Date: 12 February 2006

Location: Bull and Barley Inn, Eton St Cambooya

Investigators: Kevin G, Karen B-G & Kevin W

Background of Location
The Bull and Barley Inn was approximately built in 1902. It has continued to operate as a hotel which also provides accommodation. The building has two stories. The first floor houses the bar, lounge, dining and kitchen areas. The second floor is for accommodation.

The Inn is currently owned by Steele Davis.

Alleged Paranormal Activities
It is reputed that a room on the western side of the second floor is the site of unexplained activities. According to the book “Ghostly Tales of Toowoomba” by Don Talbot, this room was numbered room 6. The Inn has undergone extensive renovations over the past few years. This room is now numbered room 7. This room was determined to be the former room 6 through referencing the section on the Bull and Barley Inn in Don Talbot’s book. Further, unexplained activities were to have occurred near the old fire escape. This fire escape was removed during renovations.

It has been alleged that an apparition of a lady has been seen in the former room 6 and by the old fire escape. The alleged lady is described as being tall with long grey hair wearing a blue gown and long veil over her head.

The window in the former room 6 was alleged to be found opened after repeatedly being closed by a cleaner (Talbot 2004).

The building appears to be in a sound and very good condition. The building is constructed of timber. The building is very well maintained and continues to be renovated.

This observation included all three Investigators sitting quietly in room 6 for approximately 30-40 minutes.

Room 6
Visual
8:30pm. Kevin W reported that the large key tag (hard plastic approx 10cmX6cm) hanging off the door appeared to begin swaying. An infrared thermometer reading and Tri-field meter reading showed nothing unusual. Each investigator concluded that a breeze coming from an adjacent room across the hallway might explain this movement.
Auditory
7:40pm. Karen reported what she thought to be a person sighing near her. She immediately asked the other Investigators if they had sighed. They claimed not to have sighed. Both of the other Investigators were approximately 1.5 – 2 metres from Karen at the time.
Olfactory
Nothing to report
Tactile
Nothing to report
General Sense/Feeling

Audio
An anomaly was recorded at 9:05pm. Nothing was noticed at the time of the investigation. Upon later listening to the two audio recordings taken on the night some unusual sounds were noticed in the second recording. The sound was very faint, trebly and appeared to be voice like. The Investigation team noticed at least one mosquito in the room during the evening. The anomaly on the audio recording may be the sound of a mosquito flying.
Infrared Camera
Video recorder experienced a malfunction and therefore nothing was recorded.
Video recording

Hallway Area
Digital Camera
Nothing to report
Audio
No recording made in this area
Infrared Camera
No recording made in this area
Video recording

Hallway to Verandah including Old Fire Escape
Digital Camera
Some opaque circles in three photos. May be glare from flash. However, there were no mirrors or glass in the area.
Audio
No recording made in this area

Infrared Camera
No recording made in this area
Video recording
Nothing to report

Conclusions From Investigation
Extensive readings were conducted mainly in room 6 but also in the second floor hallway. Some video and still camera shots were made in the hallway leading to the verandah and location of old fire escape. These readings showed no significantly unusual activities.

Karen’s report of the sound of what she believed to be a person sighing may have been one of the other Investigators. It is reasonable to conclude that a person may sigh and not be aware they had done so if asked.

The unusual sounds picked up in the second audio recording may be explained as the sound of a flying mosquito. The sound of at least one mosquito was noted by the Investigation team during observations in room 6. The fact that the Investigation team did not hear the unusual sound at the time may be explained by the possibility that the mosquito passed close by the digital recorder being held by Kevin G.

The small opaque circles found in three photos may be glare from a shiny surface. Some Paranormal investigators may report these as orbs, which are said to be an indication of some psychic activity. Such a conclusion cannot be made of these photos.

Bullshead Inn

Investigation Date: 26 February 2006

Location: Bullshead Inn Drayton Road Drayton

Investigators: Kevin G, Karen B-G & Kevin W

Background of Location
The Bullshead Inn was built in 1847 by ex-convict William Horton. The Inn was used by Squatters as a meeting place. It was also a rest point for travellers making their way through the Darling Downs. The Bullshead Inn was considered very stylish in these early settlement days. Many social functions in the district were held at the Inn in the early days of its history. Governors, the clergy, squatters and politicians were some of the people who patronised this establishment. The two storey building standing today was built in 1859. The Inn operated as a public house until 1879 when it was bought by the Lynch family whom renamed it “The Terrace”. The building remained a private residence and continued to be occupied by the Lynch family until 1973. The property was purchased by the National Trust of Queensland in that year. The building and its surroundings underwent extensive refurbishments before the Inn was opened as a public museum.

The Inn is currently owned and under the management of the National Trust of Queensland.

Alleged Paranormal Activities
It is claimed that the ghost of a long haired women in a nightgown was seen in the old building which has long since been pulled down. It is claimed that this ghost has appeared throughout the years in the existing building.

The alleged presence of ghosts of two drovers has been reported on the 1st floor section of the building. A story has it that two drovers died of arsenic poisoning in a room on the 1st floor. Apparently the arsenic was used in their chewing tobacco for medicinal purposes.

Conclusions From Investigation
Extensive readings and recordings from all listed equipment were conducted in the Drawing, Nursery and Sitting rooms. Tri-field readings, video, still photography and digital audio recording were made around the old well. Still camera shots were taken around the front exterior of the Inn. The EMF, Tri-field, thermometer and Anemometer readings recorded showed no significant or unusual activities.

Karen reported the sound of what she believed to be two foot steps behind her in the hallway off the Nursery Room when she was setting up video equipment. This may have been an echo effect caused by one of the other investigators or the Museum representative walking around inside the ground floor of the building.

The unusual sound picked up in the 3rd audio recording from the Nursery Room was a ‘puff’ sound. This sound resembles a sound that could be produced from a person exhaling quickly. While the Investigators can not explain this sound it may have been produced by Kevin G who was the closest to the digital recorder.

A ‘hah’ sound was found on the 3rd recording taken at the old well. This ‘hah’ sound is similar a short and sharp exhale that a person may make. The closest person to the recorder was Kevin G. The natural explanation for this sound may be:
1. Kevin G may have produced this noise
Or;
2. A lizard may have been near the old well. It is possible that it may not have been seen in the darkness and may have ‘hissed’ at investigators near by.

Observation of both the video and audio recording taken in the Nursery and Drawing rooms showed no unusual visual or audio activities.
